Barbara Fiore was born and raised in New Jersey. She studied at the University of New Hampshire and graduated with a degree in Art History from New York University. She started her artistic career as a web designer and illustrator. Tired of the computer, she took a continuing education class at the School of Visual Arts in handbuilding and discovered clay as the perfect medium of expression for her metaphorical thinking. The “real” world, tactile quality and permanence of clay was instantly appealing. Years of design and doodling came together with clay to create a world of new possibilities. Barbara lives and works along the Delaware River in Northeastern Pennsylvania with her husband, artist Peter Fiore.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT...
I have always been inspired by the physical and visual world of animals, nature and people -- how we are all related and how we interact – the good, the bad and the ugly. Through humor, I use animals to examine what makes us human and to remind us that we are also animals. By anthropomorphizing animals, I explore our emotions and our relationships. Through metaphor or by revisiting traditional stories and ideas, I shuffle the narrative so that people can take a fresh look, a closer look, and perhaps discover something about themselves and the world.
